How about taking some risks at home!

Maybe it is just me who has this school of thought, so I will tone it down slightly.

Oh hell.

If there is a coach I respect to this day, has to be Johan Cruyff the Dutch great.

Why you may ask?

Because he hated losing and because he understood that the way variables are created meant that there was no way a football team could go forever without losing, he insisted on his sides playing good attractive football.

For him, even in loss, as long the team played well he could take it home.

And which is why I was distraught watching the Harambee Stars losing to Nigeria in the manner they did yesterday.

We were the home team, needed the three points and had a very good crowd turn-out in Kasarani on a Wednesday and then we fail to trouble the Nigerian keeper all afternoon.

How about taking some risks.

We played with five central midfielders in the middle of the park and four central defenders (By trade) at the back. What is that all about?

And we only brought in a proper winger (Steve Waruru) in the second half when the momentum had completely swung the opposite direction and a forward (Andrew Murunga) with a minute to go.

Eish!!

Our fullbacks were non-existent and so the Nigerians defended high up the pitch because there was no threat, as again, we had absolutely no pace in the side, considering our wingers were Francis Kahata and Peter Opiyo... Yes, Opiyo.

And so we created lesser chances that we did away from home in Calabar. How about that for a statistic.

I think that it all boils down to winning mentality. If our coach had a good one, then we would have had Paul Were, Clifton Miheso or even Noah Wafula in our side on the wings and Mulinge Ndeto would not be playing in a fullback position.

And maybe Edwin Lavatsa would have partnered Kepha Aswani upfront.

For crying out loud, we were the home side. How about taking some risks at home next time bosses.
