COSAFA Men's U-17: Hard-fought win over Malawi impresses Mutapa

Zambia U-17 national team coach Osward Mutapa expressed happiness with his players following a hard-fought 3-2 win over hosts Malawi at the ongoing COSAFA U17 Championships to progress to the semifinals with a hundred percent record in the group stage.

Mutapa was impressed with the way his players accounted for themselves despite making six changes to his starting line up to give other players a feel of the tournament.

" Great result for us. We made six changes, It's not easy to make those many changes and still win the game. Playing the hosts we knew it was going to be tough but the boys played their lungs out and we are happy they did well," he said.

His Malawian counterpart Deklerk Lomoti Msakakuona was left disappointed as his side bowed out of the tournament in the group stage.

"It's painful to bow out at this stage. In football when you don't take your chances and your opponents do, You lose but to be fair the overall performance was good," he said.

"So times you just unlucky. You play well and lose the game but sometimes you play badly and win."

Malawi came from a goal down twice to level matters but could not get anything out of the match as Substitute Peter Chikola scored directly from a corner kick to earn the junior Copper Bullets a hard-fought 3-2 win dumping out the hosts from the tournament.

Zambia will now face group B runners up Angola in the second semifinal match at Mpira Stadium at 14: 30hrs. Eswatini and Mozambique square off in the first semifinal tie at 11:00hrs.
