Frank Lampard reveals why he dropped Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley against Leicester

After starting in the 4-0 loss to Manchester United, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard dropped Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley to the bench as he opted to start with Olivier Giroud and Mateo Kovacic in the 1-1 draw against Leicester City.

Abraham was benched in the European Super Cup defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday before he appeared as a substitute during the penalty shootout loss. Giroud who started the game broke the deadlock for Chelsea before Sadio Mane ensured the game went to extra-time with his early second-half equalizer.

Speaking in a press conference after the Leicester stalemate, Lampard was asked why he dropped Abraham and Barkley to the bench, "It's just a choice. They have different attributes to give. I thought Tammy did well last week (at United). Unfortunately, he didn't get his goal. If it goes in off the post it's a completely different feeling for him.

"It will be a season during which I've got competition up there. Olivier scored during the week and did well. I've got choices there. It's the same in midfield. It was a difficult choice to take Kovacic out of midfield. He didn't deserve to not play at all but I have to make decisions and that is what I've gone with."
