According to Telegraph Sport reports, Wayne Rooney could be in contention to make his return to English football with Derby County being the club in talks.
The former Manchester United and England international is tipped to join Derby in what is set to be a player-manager position.
Phillip Cocu took over the reins from Frank Lampard in July on a four-year contract as the latter went on to manage Chelsea from Maurizio Sarri who left for Juventus.
Mel Morris who is the owner of the Championship is said to be in talks with Rooney's agent Paul Stretford in hopes that a deal can be secured for the DC United player to come onboard.
“At the moment I cannot say anything. We are working on completing the team and we said it was not complete yet,” he said. “It’s true we’re working to get the team done but I can’t say anything about names before things are done. We have a lot of players we think could be an asset for the team. You always try to get the best you can with the resources you have available at the club. There are a few more days, hopefully, something can happen.”
The 33-year-old Rooney is contracted to the American club until 2020 and it is yet to be seen if he will extend his contract further with rumours swirling of his return to the UK.
He is currently the fifth top goalscorer in the Eastern Conference having managed to score 11 goals - pushing his side to fourth on the table.
Rooney was initially signed by Manchester United back in 2004 from Everton and then returned to the former in 2017 before making his move to the MLS club.
One can say that he has gotten himself a rather decorated career as he has gone on to be England's all-time record goalscorer - 53 goals in 120 appearances - United's top scorer as well having tallied 253 goals in 559 games played.
Telegraph Sport reported that the 33-year-old is currently working on his coaching badges which may even prove the player-manager rumour with Derby true.
“I’m taking the steps to get my badges completed and when I finish playing I’ll see what opportunities come up,” Rooney told.
“There’s already offers which have been made, but at the minute I'm still a player and I want to enjoy playing, and then I’ll see which offers are right when I do finish.”
However, as Derby were dealt a massive blow when Lampard left, this may also be the case if Rooney leaves DC United as reports claim that he has been the standout player who has brought change to the club.
“He’s changed everything. I think he’s changed the culture of this club,” Steve Birnbaum, the DC United defender, said. “The work ethic that he puts in in practice and you guys see it in the games, but he’s the type of guy who just wants to win at all costs. Guys want to play for him. They want to show him that they’re putting in the work just the same as he is. We have this sort of confidence or swag going into games because of him.”
