Chelsea defender David Luiz says the club supporters’ patient could wear out in just six months if the Blues are not competing for trophies.
Fans did not get along with Maurizio Sarri despite the former coach leading the west London side to Europa League win and a top-three finish in the Premier League. Now with the club legend, Frank Lampard set to lead the Blues in the new campaign, fans’ expectations could be a little less after the club lost Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and a transfer ban looming over them. It is believed the supporters are fully behind Lampard’s appointment but Luiz insists there will be something more important in the mind of the fans when January comes around.
"I think everyone understands the moment and everyone understands to be patient but in the end, everyone wants to win. They are going to be patient in the first six months and then in the last six months they want us to win,” he said.
“It is going to be like that, we have to think about that and do the best to make them happy. If you don’t think like that [to win trophies] then you can’t play for Chelsea. The ambition has to be high. Of course, you have many, many fantastic clubs.”
"They are working with the managers more than three or four years and they have amazing squads. Inside the pitch, it is up to us to have to show our jobs.”
Chelsea will start their Premier League campaign against Manchester United on August 19th at Old Trafford.
