Monreal reveals his desire to captain Arsenal

15 Jul 2019, 14:30

Nacho Monreal has indicated he will be proud to captain Arsenal if Laurent Koscielny leaves this summer.

The former French international boycotted training with the club, refusing to board a plane with the rest of the team as they headed out for a preseason tour.

Monreal, whose future was recently sorted after agreeing a year's extension, now says it will be one of his proudest moments to lead the club if given the chance.

"Two captains left last season if I have to be one of the captains I will be very proud,’ said Monreal as quoted by Metro Sport.

"Being one of the captains of Arsenal is to feel proud, we’re talking about one of the great clubs and I will accept it of course," he added.

Monreal is one of the senior players at the club, and coach Unai Emery might consider handing him the armband if Koscielny will be allowed to leave.

The Spanish full-back further revealed that they still hold Koscielny highly, and will be welcomed back if he changes his mind.

Koscielny is thought to be keen on returning to France after nine years in London, with Bordeaux, Lorient and Lyon all touted as possible destinations.

Arsenal have slapped a £10 price tag on the 33-year-old.
