AFCON 2019: Uganda go top of Group A after seeing off DR Congo

Uganda Cranes dislodged hosts Egypt from top of Group A after flying past DR Congo 2-0 in the 2019 African Cup of Nations with goals coming courtesy of Patrick Kaddu and Emanuel Okwi in a match staged at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday 22nd June.

The clash was pitting neighbors with two-time AFCON winners DR Congo heading into the clash in mixed form after finishing second in their Group qualifiers while Uganda arrived having topped their Group and beating Ivory Coast in a warm-up match of the tournament.

Kadddu goal

After an open start from both sides, it was Uganda who found the back of the net first in the 15th minute when Farouk Miya whipped in an inch-perfect corner to the near post that was flicked on by a deft header from  Kampala Capital City Authority forward Patrick Kaddu.

Wasted Chances

Uganda squandered a glorious opportunity minutes later when Kaddu was through on goal but with the Congolese defenders breathing down his neck, he hurried his shot which went wide off the mark. Sébastien Desabre's men had another golden opportunity in the 41st minute when Michael Azira's long-range effort kissed the top of the crossbar on it's way out.

Bakambu effort

Congo finally got a sniff on goal in the 42nd minute when Beijing Goan forward Cedric Bakambu twisted a turned inside the box amidst bodies of the Uganda defense and released a low shot that required a fingertip save from Dennis Onyango.

Okwi goal

Uganda began the second half like a house on fire as they doubled their lead in the 47th minute when that man again Farouk Miya delivered a devilish cross into the box from a free kick on the left flank which was headed in by Emanuel Okwi.

Miya chance

Farouk Miya was a constant menace from set pieces and went close again in the 56th minute when his free-kick that was curled into the top left corner required a last-ditch save from Ley Matampi to tip the ball over for a corner.

Uganda held on for the 2-0 win as they next face Zimbabwe while DR Congo will look to pick themselves up against hosts Egypt with both clashes being played on Wednesday 26th June.
