AFCON 2019 is a day away. Futaa looks ahead on what you can expect in an intriguing Group A.Will the hosts live up to their pre-tournament rating as the favourites to become African champions? How will the heavyweight that is DR Congo battle for second against Zimbabwe and Uganda? That is Group A, guys.

Egypt 🇪🇬

In Egypt, we’re not only talking about host advantage but in The Pharaohs, we have Africa’s greatest ever nation with a record of seven titles. And with the country’s greatest ever player Mohamed Salah, as well as the Arsenal midfield hardman Mohamed Elneny in the team, not many teams can admit they're keen to face them.

The Pharaohs of Egypt

  • Prediction: 1st in the group
  • CAF Ranking: 8th
  • AFCON appearances: 24
  • Key man: Mohamed Salah.

DR Congo 🇨🇩

The Diables Rouges. Every time we watch DR Congo in the AFCON we’re often surprised at how strong the Central African side is. Florent Ibengé’s team finished third in qualifying - losing only once in six games. Congo have created their African pedigree via club football, that is TP Mazembe, a club with five continental titles in the last decade.

DR Congo national side

  • Prediction: 2nd in the group
  • CAF Ranking: 5th
  • AFCON Appearances: 18
  • Key man: Yannick Bolasie (Everton).

Zimbabwe 🇿🇼

A fast-rising minnow in Southern Africa. Coach Sunday Chidzambwa’s Warriors. The unquestionable Group A dark horses. Zimbabwe earned a place in this AFCON in a group that had the formidable DR Congo. The Warriors claimed four points off DR Congo via a draw in Brazzaville and a 2-1 win in Harare. They meet again in Egypt.

Zimbabwe's Warriors

  • Prediction: 3rd in the group
  • CAF Ranking: 26th
  • AFCON Appearances: Three
  • Key player: Knowledge Musona (Anderlecht - Belgium).

Uganda 🇺🇬

An East African giant. The Cranes. 1978’s runner’s up. Coached by the Frenchman Sébastien Desabre, Uganda had stellar qualification success. Four wins and a draw from six games - though in a fairly breezy Group L that featured Tanzania, Lesotho and Cape Verde.

The Cranes of Uganda

  • Prediction: 4th in the group
  • CAF Ranking: 17th
  • AFCON Appearances: Seven
  • Key player: Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns - South Africa).

So will our predictions prove true or will football make us gasp ‘wow’ again? Let’s find out in less than a day!
