Masuaku cancels Olunga's goal as Harambee Stars share spoils with DR Congo

Harambee Stars settled for a 1-1 draw with DR Congo in a friendly match played at  Estadio de Santa Ana in Madrid on Saturday 15th.

Michael Olunga opened the scoring for Harambee Stars in the 25th minute with a beauty. DR Congo missed the opportunity of leveling the scores from the spot as Patrick Matasi saved Cédric Bakambu's penalty. However, Arthur Masuaku scored a late goal with three minutes to go to force the match to end with a 1-1 scoreline.

Olunga goal

Harambee Stars had a nice play from the back, Abud Omar looked for Ayub Timbe on the left flank. The winger dribbled past two Congo players leaving them on the floor before spotting Michael Olunga on the right just outside the box. The Kashiwa Reysol forward had time for an extra touch before taking a shot with his left leg, beating the keeper to the bottom corner to hand Stars the lead.

Penalty miss

A through pass cut across Harambee Stars defence, leaving Cédric Bakambu one on one with Patrick Matasi who brought down the forward inside the six yards and referee pointed for a penalty kick. Bakambu stepped up to take the penalty, sending the ball on the left side but Matasi was quick, making a correct dive and saved the penalty to ensure Stars keep their lead.

Timbe’s injury

Man of the moment, Ayub Timbe, without a tackle he went down with what appeared to be a muscle injury. The medics were called to attend to the winger but he could not continue and had to pave way for Paul Were.

DR Congo forward was fouled just outside the box and referee awarded a freekick on the edge. Arthur Masuaku was the man to take it. His shot went below the feet of Stars wall and past Matasi who fumbled as he tried to stop the shot and parity was restored.

The team will now fly back to France on Sunday, three days before their scheduled departure to Cairo, Egypt, on June 19, 2019.
