14 Jun 2019, 17:30

Senegal are the highest ranked African team in the latest FIFA World Ranking, with a week to the start of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The West-African side are placed 22nd in the world, having moved a place up the ladder, and lead Tunisia, who are placed second on the continent.

The Carthage Eagles are 25th in the world, while Nigeria's Super Eagles are in 45th position after sliding three places from the last ranking.

Morocco (47) and DR Congo (49) occupy the fourth and fifth places, while the Black Stars of Ghana complete the top six nations in Africa.

Defending champions Cameroon are seventh in Africa and 51st worldwide, having moved up three places.

The African giants will be battling for the continent's biggest prize yet when they meet in Egypt from 21 June, with the above teams all considered as favourites.

Meanwhile, Belgium continues leading the standings, while world champion France are second.

Portugal, who last week won the Nations League title, have moved into fifth position, while there is an improvement from a trio of former World cup winners in Germany, Italy and Spain.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 25 July 2019, six days after the Africa Cup of Nations.
