Chelsea confirm transfer of Nigerian defender to Torino

11 Jun 2019, 21:20

After spending the 2018-2019 season on loan at Torino, Chelsea have confirmed that Ola Aina has completed a permanent transfer to the Italian outfit.

The defender made six appearances for the Blues during the 2016-17 campaign. He joined the club as an Under-11 and progressed through our Academy where he won multiple honors. The 22-year-old will now move to Torino who have exercised an option to make the deal permanent after he spent a successful season on loan there in 2018/19. He made 32 appearances and scored once.

In an interview with Sky Italy, Torino president Urbano Cairo confirmed that the club has exercised their option to buy Aina, "We exercised our option to buy Ola Aina, as well as [Christian] Ansaldi and [Koffi] Djidji. Now Torino own all their players."

Aina's Chelsea contract was set to expire at the end of June. Chelsea currently only have Cesar Azpilicueta and David Zappacosta as the club’s recognised right-backs, and Reece James could therefore be expected to compete with the duo for a starting berth.
