Player Profile: The iconic Spaniard Sergio Ramos

We usually profile younger, up-and-coming stars on Futaa but in a slight change to the theme, here's a man that needs absolutely no introduction.

Real Madrid & Spain skipper, Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos quick bio 📊

  • Age: 33
  • Nationality: Spanish
  • Height: 184 cm
  • Club: Real Madrid
  • Position: Central defender
  • Estimated transfer value: €25m

A brief history of an icon 🏆

Since his move to Real Madrid as a teenager from Sevilla in a record deal at the time for a defender, Sergio Ramos has enjoyed a glittering 15-year career so far. He's won pretty much everything there is to win in football, including the World Cup and two European Championship titles with Spain and four Champions League crowns with Real Madrid, those just the pinnacle of his trophy-laden years.

The €27 million fee that Real Madrid forked out in 2005 to acquire Ramos' services looks like pocket-change now. 165 caps, 20 international goals and a raft of trophies later, Real Madrid's number 4 will be remembered for many years to come by fans and opponents alike.

Playing style & strengths 🥊

The Spain skipper is a complete defender, widely regarded as the finest of his generation and one of the best in the history of the game. He's quick, aggressive, comfortable with the ball at his feet and superb in the air. He also reads danger well and is willing to put his body on the line for the sake of the team. Simply put, he can do everything, even excel at right back, a position he learned early in his career.

Ramos is also a clutch player. He was mocked for a penalty that he skied against Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League semifinals, but two years later he atoned for that miss by scoring a double to sink Bayern and guide his side to the final, a match in which he scored a 93rd minute equalizer to take the showpiece to extra time against Real's city rivals Atletico, and Real would go on to win the trophy. That's as clutch as it gets.

Here's a look at Ramos's ridiculous goal numbers from last season:

Weaknesses 😡

Technically, there are no weaknesses in the Sergio Ramos artillery. However, he can be petulant and unnecessarily aggressive, evidenced by his record tally of red cards in LaLiga history. Referees have dismissed him from the pitch 19 times in the white of Los Blancos. At 33, that's not something he's likely to be iron out of his game. His ill-discipline comes part and parcel with his aggressive playing style.

What's next for Ramos? 🤔

The serial winner will want to put a disappointing 2018/2019 with Real Madrid behind him as Los Blancos aim to regain their Champions League crown. They've started the summer recruitment drive well with Eden Hazard, Eder Militao and Luka Jovic arriving at the Bernabeu.
