List of new tough Premier League rules that will come into play next season

20 May 2019, 23:00

With the dust of the recently-concluded English Premier League season in which Manchester City defended their title slowly settling, the International Football Association (IFAB ) has announced new rules that will guide the league from next season.

The new rules, which include adjustments in handballs, dropballs, and free kicks, have already been approved and will come into effect in the new season.

The new regulations and adjustments are meant to help minimize controversies that are at times linked to officiating mistakes.

Substitutions

In the new regulations, players who are substituted will no longer have to leave the pitch near the dugouts and will be allowed to cross the perimeter at the nearest point, thus sparing everyone from time-wasting.

Penalties

Goalkeepers must now have one foot on the goal line at the penalty kicks and are also forbidden to touch goalposts before the kick.

Handballs

The new rules also state that if the ball hits an attacker's arm in the build-up to a goal - whether it was intentional or accidental - such a goal will be disallowed. The defending team will be awarded a free-kick.

Red cards to coaches

The coaching staff can now be punished with a yellow or red card, as opposed to just being sent off verbally by the referee as it has been.

Freekicks

From next season, attackers will not be allowed in the walls when free kicks are taken since, As IFAB stated, "there is no legitimate justification for attackers to be in the 'wall' and their presence is against the 'spirit of the game'
