Messi equals 66-year-old record with latest Pichichi win

20 May 2019, 17:40

Barcelona Star Lionel Messi has added another feather to his cap after he earned a record-equaling sixth Pichichi trophy of his career.

The Argentine wizard scored 36 goals in La Liga this season, including two on the final day of the season, to earn himself the famous 'Pichichi' for the third year in a row.

The win took his tally in Spain to six, equaling the record set by former Athletic Club star Telmo Zarra 66 years ago.

Zarra, who played between 1939 and 1957 earned his titles by outscoring opponents in the 1944–45, 1945–46, 1946–47, 1949–50, 1950–51 and 1952–53 seasons.

Apart from equalling the record, Messi also set another record, making it the first time in the history of the league that the winner would beat other competitors by a five-goal margin.

Messi's sublime form played a major role in the club winning the La Liga title, but could not help them reach the Champions League final after falling to Liverpool in the semifinals.
