Obi Mikel: I'm ready to lead Nigeria to AFCON glory

15 May 2019, 15:45

John Obi Mikel has been recalled to the national team and will lead the Super Eagles in this year's Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The 32-year-old last played for Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and did not feature in the qualifying matches for this year’s Nations Cup.

Head coach Gernot Rohr believes the former Chelsea star's experience is invaluable for the young team members, hence his inclusion in the team.

He has accepted the challenge to lead the Super Eagles to glory in Egypt.

Mikel currently plays for English Championship side Middlesborough and has been a key figure for Nigeria in recent seasons, winning 85 caps and scoring six goals since making his debut 2005 against Libya.

Nigeria are pooled alongside Guinea, Burundi and Madagascar in Group B for the tournament, which is set to kick off in June 21-July 19th.
