Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed on Thursday, May 2 that forward Shinji Okazaki will be departing from the club at the end of the season.

Okazaki who has been a member of Japan's past three World Cup squads joined Leicester from German side Mainz back in 2015 but managed to make 20 appearances this 2018/19 season.

“He leaves a champion, he leaves as a legend in the club’s history,” Rodgers said at a news conference on Thursday.

The 33-year-old according to British press had initially eyed a transfer to another Premier League club in January but later confirmed he would stay with Leicester until his contract reaches expiration.

A Premiership winner with the Foxes in 2016, Okazaki told that he would a consider a move in order to improve his chances of making the national of his native for the 2022 World Cup set to take place in Qatar.

The forward was left out of Hajime Moriyasu's team in this year's Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates and a pair of international friendlies against Bolivia and Colombia in March.

Okazaki has played in a total of 136 matches for Leicester City, scoring 19 goals. The club has two premiership matches left to play this season and currently sits in eighth on the league table.
