Alexis Sanchez - Arsenal's loss was no-one's gain as Arsenal & United scrap for Europe
The Chilean winger left Emirates Stadium in controversial fashion in a swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and nothing has gone according to plan for any parties involved in the deal.
15 - Alexis Sanchez has scored 15 away league goals this season; only Kevin Phillips (16 in 99/00) has more in a single PL campaign. Star.— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) May 13, 2017
Opta's stat from two years ago indicates how important Sanchez was to Arsenal's cause in terms of getting results on the road, but he hasn't replicated that form by any stretch of the imagination at Man United. One goal and three assists this season in the Premier League isn't a return that reflects the ability of a two-time Copa America winner and United fans are desperate to get his high wages off their balance sheet.
Arsenal's away day woes
Arsenal's away form since Sanchez left has been relatively catastrophic. Sanchez scored the most and assisted the most away goals out of any player in the Premier League from 14/15 - 17/18. Since he left, Arsenal has won 6 out of 25 away games. That is surely not a coincidence.
Mkhitaryan's struggles & top-four hopes
Arsenal's cut of the deal hasn't worked out too well either, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan's inconsistency and injury proneness damaging his chances to produce a proper goal output.
Both clubs are out of form at just the wrong time as they scrap for a place in the top four.
Arsenal remaining fixtures 🔴 🗓
- 28 April - Leicester (A)
- 5 May - Brighton (H)
- 12 May - Burnley (A)
Manchester United remaining fixtures 👿 🗓
- 28 April - Chelsea (H)
- 5 May - Huddersfield (A)
- 12 May - Cardiff (H)
Arsenal will be hoping that United & Chelsea share the points this Sunday, but that will only serve to help their top-four push if they can collect maximum points at Leicester earlier that day.
In the race for the top four, all of the candidates seem to be slipping up. A win for any of the three this weekend could be decisive.
