Guardiola defends under fire Sarri after 6-0 demolition

11 Feb 2019, 07:30

Following their 6-0 trouncing of Chelsea, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has defended Maurizio Sarri whose job is under the line, insisting that the Italian manager needs time just as he was offered time in his first season.

Chelsea lost more ground in the top four race as they plummeted to sixth following their loss to Manchester City with Sergio Aguero bagging his second hat-trick in three games as he became the fifth player to score hat-tricks in consecutive home Premier League games and the first since Didier Drogba nine years ago. Sarri was asked about his future after the game and noted that his job was "always at risk".

Speaking after the win over Chelsea, Guardiola defender Sarri, asking for him to be given more time, “I know what he wants to do, I think this kind of person, these type of games always help to make our football better," said Guardiola. "They beat us at Stamford Bridge and against Napoli last season it was tight, they were better at moments.

“People don't understand how difficult the first year can be. My first season here was difficult. In my first year we could not play in the way I wanted. People think if you buy players, you can immediately come in and win, but you need time. It just depends on the belief of the owners – if the people really believe in that.”
