Extra time needed as Bayern edge Hertha to book quarters slot

Bayern Munich navigated through their boogie team with a 3-2 win over Hertha Berlin in extra time following a 2-2 draw in regular time as Serge Gnabry bagged a brace in a DFB-Pokal match on Wednesday 6th February.

Stats: Hertha Berlin vs Bayern Munich

Mittelstadt goal

Fans inside the Olympiastadion Berlin were treated to an electric start to the game as barely two minutes into the game Leon Goretzka looked to have brought down by Karim Rekik but the referee booked the former Schalke man. Exactly 52 minutes later Hertha capitalized on Bayern's failure to deal with the goalkeepers long ball as Solomon Kalou threaded in a neat through ball to Maximilian Mittelstadt who fired them into the lead.

Gnabry goal

Hertha's lead was short lived as in the seventh minute Bayern drew level after a lovely bit of play from Joshua Kimmich who whipped in a cross that was laid off to Serge Gnabry by Robert Lewandowski with the former Arsenal man letting loose of a shot that rippled the back of the net.

Bayern domination

Niko Kovac's men dominated the rest of the first half, squandering a host of chances to take the lead as they went into the half time break locked in a 1-1 scoreline.

Gnabry brace

Bayern came into the second half guns blazing and went ahead in the 49th minute when James Rodriguez played in Gnabry through on goal after Lewandowski did all the work brilliantly holding up play. Gnabry made no mistake as rifled his effort into the bottom left corner.

Selke goal

Experienced center back Matt Hummels had a horror show as his short header to the keeper was pounced on by Davie Selke who had just been on the pitch for less than two minutes as he took the ball past Sven Ulreich to tap it into the net in the 67th minute.

Coman goal

Bayern deservedly regained their lead in the 98th minute when Frank Ribery delivered a cross that was headed by Lewandoski and recycled by him after it failed to reach the target as he lopped to ball towards the target with Kingsly Coman making sure of the goal by heading it over the line in a sea of Hertha players.

Bayern Munich finally pick up a win against Hertha Berlin after four previous attempts.
