Barcelona cements top position with away win at Getafe
Barcelona has registered a very vital 2-1 win over Getafe to keep their Laliga hunt going at high speed.
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scored the two goals for Barca while Mata, who missed a couple of chances, scored the solo goal for the home team on Sunday night.
Getafe had put themselves ahead courtesy of Mata’s low drive that went past Cillessen but the referee ruled the goal out citing an infringement that was committed prior to the goal. Angel was adjudged to have pushed Pique in the process and thus the goal could not stand in the 9th minute.
Angel got himself on the receiving end after Arthur elbowed him on the face. The Barca star was lucky to remain on the pitch after that ugly incident. It was quite a bad call from the referee.
A high back pass from Vidal put Ter Stegen under pressure from Angel as the Dutch keeper tried to clear the mess under pressure. Angel hit Ter Stegen on the feet and the referee’s intervention might have saved Barcelona from Getafe’s onslaught.
Messi started growing into the game and whenever he had the ball Getafe found it hard dealing with him. The Barca captain scored through in the 21st minute from a tight angle to the left of the host’s goal.
Barca doubled their lead through Luis Suarez who fired from outside the box. The ball landed on the Uruguayan way after the Getafe back line cleared the ball from a Messi free-kick. Soria was well beaten by the in-coming powerful shot for Barca’s double.
The home side halved the deficit in the 44th minute as Mata poked home from an Angel close range. Earlier, the woodwork had saved the Catalans from conceding as the ball hit the post and went back to play at a time Getafe were showing resilience and the will not to sit back.
Getafe got a fabulous chance to pull parity after Ter Stegen cleared the ball awfully landing on Angel’s way. They were fortunate to see the ball just roll across goal with no one from the home available just to poke home in the 50th minute.
Ter Stegen did well to keep a Cabrera header away as Getafe threatened to attack from all flanks. Mata just could not grow enough to meet a high ball inside the Barcelona box as Getafe threatened from another high ball. Mata was at fault once again as he missed a very open chance to scored second for Getafe. He rounded Barca’s keeper but his final shot just flew over the bar with no one really putting him under pressure in the 68th minute.
The win sees Barca pull ten points away from arch-rivals Real Madrid who lost their home fixture to real Sociedad earlier. Barca cemented their standing at the summit of the pile especially after the 1-1 draw between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.
