Alisson Liverpool's Last Line of Defense
It was a dramatic and nervy night at Anfield, with Liverpool advancing to the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Napoli, after a string of saves from Alisson Becker.
Opta's "expected goals" metric uses stats from shots on target, saves and more to calculate a complicated equation that delivers a simple result - the number of goals expected to be scored/conceded by a team. Opta's metric below gives a verdict so far and it shows that Alisson is overachieving with respect to his peers.
8 - Based on Opta's xG model, the average goalkeeper would have conceded eight more goals than Alisson has for Liverpool in the Premier League & Champions League combined in 2018-19. Wall. pic.twitter.com/H9rdXdXZoC— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) December 12, 2018
It seems that Alisson is definitely living up to some of the hype around him as one of the best shot-stoppers in the game. He'll be in action again on Sunday at Anfield when Manchester United are Liverpool's visitors in the English Premier League.
