Egypt refuse to compete with Morocco for AFCON 2019 hosting rights

06 Dec 2018, 16:25

Egypt Football Association (EFA) has stated that they will not bid to host the 2019 Africa Cup of nations if another North African country submits a bid.

CAF recently stripped Cameroon of the rights to host the biennial continental showpiece noting that, “a number of compliance conditions were not met.”

They further revealed that the confederation would initiate an open and urgent call for new host country bids to ensure AFCON 2019 takes place next summer and ensure that a new host is in place by 31st December 2018.

Egypt, South Africa and Morocco are some of the countries that were strongly tipped to host the tournament that is only six months away.

But the Egyptian FA’s board member and spokesman Ahmed Megahed told BBC that they board has ruled out any possibility of submitting a bid if any other Arab country is interested.

“After an EFA meeting on Tuesday, we decided we will not make a bid for the next Afcon. We will not compete with another Arabic country - this is an official decision,” Megahed told BBC and later on CAF shared the link on their official twitter handle before pulling it down hours later.

Egypt has hosted the finals four times in 1959, 1974, 1986 and 2006,
