Why Mourinho dropped Pogba and Lukaku

Why Mourinho dropped Pogba and Lukaku

06 Dec 2018, 09:25

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho defended his decision of dropping Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba from his side's starting XI against Arsenal on Wednesday night.

The duo started during United's 2-2 draw against Southampton but the two had to sit on the substitutes bench in Red Devils' 2-2 draw with Arsenal. Mourinho opted for front three of Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial while giving Marcos Rojo first start of the season.

When asked if it was a risk starting Rojo, Mourinho said, "I don’t think gambling, I think sacrifice. They’re confident. I would never play a player if he has too many doubts. That was what happened against Southampton – too many doubts."

"You know, [it’s] technical and tactical decisions," he explained.

On playing the front three, Mourinho said, "We did that already before I think recently against Young Boys. We weren’t successful in goals we wanted to score but were happy with the situations we created. In the first half versus Young Boys, we didn’t score but had big chances. [They’re] young, fast, creative players even if they’re not what you’d call “killer” when [they have a] chance to score a goal."
