Mourinho provides fresh De Gea contract update
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has provided a fresh new contract update on David De Gea revealing that he expects the Spaniard to pen a new contract.
De Gea had his one-year option triggered by Manchester United on Thursday that will see him stay at the club till 2020 as both parties continue to negotiate improved terms. The former Atletico Madrid keeper has been subject to transfer speculations with Juventus becoming the latest club to be linked to him. Real Madrid have been pursuing De Gea for some time but that came to an end with Thibaut Courtois joining the Los Blancos in the summer.
Mourinho revealed that De Gea is close to a new contract while also heaping praise on his agent Jorge Mendes, “He wants to stay I want him to stay of course, he's the level of player Manchester United needs. Manchester United needs the best players in the world, if we want to be Manchester United we need the best player in the world. Obviously, the manager wants him to stay, the board wants him to stay, David wants him to stay.
“His agent wants the player to do what the player wants, he's not the kind of agent that is manipulative like others, and tries to influence the player. His agent lets him think and decide by himself so the point is just to agree the contract that the club wants to give and the player wants to accept. And I think, that's just my feeling, they are going to finish well.”
