Arsenal ace named Switzerland captain in the absence of club mate
Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic has named Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka as his captain in the absence of Stephan Lichtsteiner who has been the long-standing captain of the Swiss side.
Lichtsteiner was snubbed in the Switzerland squad that is set to take on Belgium and Iceland in the UEFA Nations League during this international break. Petkovic gave his reason for omitting Lichtsteiner, noting that, “I agreed with Stephan Lichtsteiner in August and in September that he will not be there in October.”
Petkovic confirmed that the full-back’s Arsenal teammate Granit Xhaka would replace him, followed by Xherdan Shaqiri and Yann Sommer as vice-captains. Switzerland are currently top of their group when they opened the UEFA League of Nation with a resounding 6-0 win over Iceland.
