Sports Broadcasting lands mega Uganda football deal
Sports Broadcasting, a local company, has acquired the rights to broadcast the Uganda Premier League, the Fufa Big League and the Uganda Cup in a deal worth Ushs. 10.8 billion (US$ 3 million) for a period of four years.
The minister of state for Tourism, Godfrey Kiwanda, Fufa president Eng. Moses Magogo, Fufa Super League chairman Arinaitwe Rugyendo, Sports Broadcasting manager Denis Mbidde and his chairman Warren Namara were present at the unveiling function held inside Achwa Hall at the Serena Hotel in Kampala on Thursday morning.
The UPL chairman related the milestone to the stability in the local league since taking over office three years ago.
“When I took over the leadership of the board, I preached three pillars upon which our football was to be driven; stability, harmony and Integrity. Stability has reached us this far the sponsorship is a result of joint sponsorship from all the stakeholders,” the UPL board chairman Arinaitwe Rugyendo remarked during the unveiling.
The Uganda premier league will receive the biggest share of US $ 600,000 (approx Ushs. 2.1 bn) per year while the Fufa Big League and Uganda cup will get US $70,000 and 80,000 (Ushs. 245M and 280M) respectively.
New deal will be activated on June 1st 2018, a day after the Azam contract expires.
The company’s chairman Warren Namara, assured media that Sports Broadcasting is investing for the long haul and not just a short term venture.
"We are not here for a short term but the long run. We want to bring Uganda into the fore and promote tourism as well,"
The Fufa president Eng. Moses Magogo said that the federation studied and learnt from the mistakes of previous broadcasters to arrive at the new development.
"This is a milestone and an emotional moment,” Magogo said adding that “Fufa has constructed solid governance for club football. We have put in place strong regulatory mechanisms where we succeeded in securing harmony.”
The sponsorship replaces the shs.5.4 Billion Azam package that was signed three and half years ago. Then, Azam took over both the title and broadcasting rights.
