The Harambee Stars need a few heroes.. Who will they be?

When is the last time the Harambee Stars played an international match without the big three; Dennis Oliech, McDonald Mariga and Arnold Origi?

It must have been ages ago.

It means a couple of things then, that the three are dependable figures in the national team, are highly consistent and you can also say, the leaders of the side.

On the other hand, you can say that we have depended on them performing well for too long and in a way, should not be talking about them missing out with too much of a fuss. We have created our own problem.

That aside, we have two must win games in a week, Versus Nigeria here and Malawi away from home. How are we going to survive without the three? Many have asked.

I too find it difficult to answer that question.

Obviously, there are players that will need to step up in the coming week. We will need a few heroes in that side.

We need two wins out of two to have realistic hopes of progression from the group and so all the players in the squad will have to perform to the best of their ability for us to get anywhere.

Who will be the main men in the coming week? Here is my take.

In goal, Duncan Ochieng can start by giving us a good solid display, which he is fully capable of. He will need to be at his best because he should expect a fair bit of pummeling from the Nigerians. Can he replace Origi? Maybe not completely. Can he play as well? you bet.

Brian Mandela and Mulinge Ndeto will be the main men at the back during the week. They have both had their fair share of experience and will have to be at their utmost if we are to have a good week.

Captain for the Nigeria game Victor Wanyama will also need to step up. Without Oliech and Origi, the two main leaders in the side, his experience of playing in Europe will come in handy. He is a man that has gone quiet in past games, but he will have to step up to the plate this time.

Francis Kahata scored our goal in Nigeria in the first leg and it was a real beauty. He has improved his overall play since and will be one of our creative outlets. He too is one that is highly inconsistent but will need to step up for the Stars.

Oliech himself will be back for the Malawi clash and is a person we will depend on heavily for goals on the day. We struggle to score goals on the international scene and he is one player we will definitely need out there.

And it does not end there. We need as many heroes as we can this week. Will they step up? I hope they do.
