Leicester City and Sheffield United are reportedly battling to sign West Bromwich Albion attacker Jay Rodriguez, according to The Star reports.
According to the publication, the Blades are targeting a reliable goalscorer in the summer transfer window as Chris Wilder looks to strengthen the squad in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Leicester have Kelechi Iheanacho as a backup to Jamie Vardy and are said to be keen on Rodriguez's signature as a cut-price option.
The Star reported that Rodriguez has a release clause of £5 million in his current West Brom contract, due to the fact that the side failed to gain promotion from the Championship.
The two sides are at very different stages of their development. Leicester have a hugely exciting squad and could genuinely push into the Premier League’s top six next season with the right recruitment.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United would likely take 17th place if it was offered right now – which is not to diminish the achievement of Chris Wilder’s side or downplay the ability of their squad.
But Rodriguez would perhaps expect more game time in Yorkshire than at Leicester and it remains to be seen who will come out on top in the transfer tussle.
It’s easy to forget that Rodriguez made waves in the Premier League at Southampton, impressing so much under Mauricio Pochettino at St Mary’s that he earned an England cap in 2013.
