Steven Pienaar announces plans after football

20 May 2019, 16:30

Former Everton winger Steven Pienaar has embarked on a new journey upon retirement by taking his coaching badges.

Pienaar became the Toffee's first ever international ambassador in April 2018 shortly after announcing his retirement from the game.

Pienaar took to Twitter and Instagram on Sunday to share news of his new learning curve in Belfast - and he thanked the Irish FA for the opportunity to help him complete the course.

He tweeted: "Thanks a lot to the @OfficialIrishFA for giving me the opportunity to learn on my coaching courses."

The former South Africa international become a fan favourite over the course of his two spells on the blue half of Merseyside after initially moving to Goodison Park on loan from Borussia Dortmund in 2007.

Pienaar became a prominent player upon the permanent transfer from the Bundesliga and was in conjunction with Leighton Barnes to rejuvenate Everton's left flank.

A move to Spurs was finalised in January 2011, but a year later Pienaar was returned to Everton on loan before again confirmed a permanent deal in the following summer.

The Johannesburg-born midfielder played another four years for the Blues before leaving the club in 2016, spending fairly brief spells with Sunderland and Bidvest Wits before officially hanging up his boots.
