Dortmund sees off Leipzig to cement top position
Axel Witsel goal in the 19 minute was all Borrusia Dortmund needed to overcome RB Leipzig in a Bundesliga clash staged at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.
The home side started brighter with Danish forward Yussuf Poulsen attempt to find one of his teammates inside the box with a chip pass being intercepted by a Dortmund defender for a fruitless corner but their opponents started dictating the game as it grew.
Dortmund’s Maximilian Philipp was to miss a good scoring chance in the 13th minute with his teammate Maximilian Philipp copying g from his script when he was to rise for a header but sent his effort well over the bar.
The visitor’s efforts were to finally pay off in the 19th minute when Axel Witsel found his way to a cross from the corner kick to head in via a deflection off the bar with the home side keeper Peter Gulacsi left rooted to his spot.
A tense second half was to await and Alcer, who had come off the bench, almost grabbed a second for the visitors in the dying minutes to put the game to bed but his looped up ball could only hit the underside of the bar.
The win sees Dortmund extend their lead at the top of Bundesliga table with 45 points; six points above second-placed Bayern Munich.
