Player Of The Month Award: Arsenal flop beats Neymar

Saint Etienne defender Mathieu Debuchy has beaten Neymar to Ligue 1 Player Of The Month gong.

The French international was released by Arsenal in January after enduring three and a half torrid years in north London. Injuries saw him only manage 30 appearances in Arsenal jersey since joining from Newcastle United for £12 million in 2014. Debuchy has found his form in Ligue 1 with Etienne netting twice for his new side and has managed to help them go unbeaten in the month of February.

His performance saw him awarded with France’s top award for the month, beating aside Paris Saint Germain superstar Neymar, despite his 19 goals in 20 games this season.

The 32-year-old has become the first defender to win the award for the last five years. Speaking after the awards, Debuchy said he is hopeful that he will get a call to the national team.
