Zesco’s meeting of Zamalek in the CAF Champions League is no longer a possibility but a sure case.
Zamalek had been forced to play a rescheduled preliminary round qualifier against Senegal’s Generation Football. Last night saw the five-time champions complete what many of us had easily predicted: beating Generation Foot to seal a Group A spot.
But the win was not a breeze. The Egyptians managed a narrow 1-0 win certousy of a Djibril Diop own goal. The first leg in Senegal had ended 2-1 in favour of Zamalek.
The group’s final club is in the form of Angolan giants Primeiro de Agosto. Known as ‘Os Rubro e Negros’, the East Africans come with the rating of having made the champions league 2018 semi-finals.
Full Group A:
The group winners and runners’ up will advance to the quarter-finals - meaning that Zesco will have to claim one big scalp.
Matchday one is set for the weekend of 19-20 November.
