Kariobangi Sharks midfielder Patrick Otieno has hit the ground running netting on his debut against Western Stima following his move from Nzoia Sugar FC. I caught up with the prodigy for a brief interview.
You scored a goal on your KPL debut for Kariobangi Sharks, how much of importance was it to get up and running in your first game?
It was a significant game for me because I always want to ensure I have a good start and scoring in the first game always gives you so much confidence for the next game and hands you a lot of courage.
You joined Sharks from Nzoia Sugar in the off-season transfer window, what motivated your move?
They are a side that develops young talent, they play good football and I think it is an upgrade from Nzoia though the club was responsible for my development but Sharks really caught my eye.
You made your first competitive debut for Sharks against Everton, how was the feeling especially in a high stakes match?
It meant a lot and showed that the coach has confidence in me for him to have me in his starting 11.
How was the experience testing yourself against English Premier League players?
It was a wonderful experience because I got to test myself with top footballers and I also got to weigh my level of energy and confidence.
Who were you looking forward to meeting from Everton?
I really wanted to meet Walcott because I'm an Arsenal fan and when he was still at the club I was a huge fan of him and up till now he still inspires me a lot.
Did you get the chance to speak to Walcott?
I spoke to Walcott and he told me about having courage in football which will help me to become a better footballer.
You finished form four last year, what can you attribute to your fast rise?
Consistency is one thing that has helped me and I've also looked after my body well, you know the KPL requires one to take care of themselves well when you don't do that your level tends to drop and I also take in a lot of advice from my seniors.
What are your season targets?
This season I'm aiming to be the top scorer and if not then the second top scorer.
What are your ambitions in football?
I want to play for the National Team because that what motivates to play football every day and play abroad one day.
