Burundi official arrested over players' AFCON bonuses

The vice president of the Football Federation of Burundi has been arrested over the disappearance of bonus money that was meant for players who took part in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.

According to BBC, Aimable Habimana, also known as Marandura has been detained since Saturday, July 6, 2019, as they unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of the cash.

The reports further indicate that Habimana was in charge of players’ bonus (Prize), and has been detained with two other workers of the federation.

Burundi was taking part in their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations tournament and was bundled out in the group stages with neither a point nor goal.

They lost their first match 1-0 to Nigeria, before suffering similar defeat to Madagascar, and another 2-0 loss to Guinea in their last group match.

The tournament has been grappling with bonuses and allowance payments, with Zimbabwe and Uganda players threatening to boycott matches if their allowances were not paid.
