AFCON 2019 will have VAR but from Quarter-finals stage

18 Jun 2019, 09:25

As reported on Futaa in May, CAF announced that Video Assistance Refereeing technology (VAR) will be used at the 2019 AFCON, but only starting from the quarter-final stage.

The Confederation of African Football confirmed that the technology will be introduced after the group stage and last 16 rounds of AFCON 2019 in Egypt.

“VAR at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt will begin from the quarter-finals of the competition,” the chairman of CAF's Referees Committee Souleyman Waberi said.

The technology won’t be making its debut in Africa. It first came into play in the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco, as well as the Champions League and Confederation Cup 2019 finals.
