Jonathan Woodgate to be appointed as Middlesbrough manager

Middlesbrough are in contention to announce former defender Jonathan Woodgate as their new manager following the departure of Tony Pulis, according to BBC Tees Sport.

The 39-year-old was part of the technical staff during Pulis' reign but has never been a manager prior to that.

Further reports reveal that coach Steve Round will rejoin the Championship side as Woodgate's assistant.

Pulis left Middlesbrough in May after they failed to reach the playoffs but the former player remained on the coaching staff.

Woodgate who previously plied his trade for Leeds, Real Madrid, and Tottenham inspired Boro to their Premier League promotion back in the 2015/16 season during his second spell as a player but was released having made one appearance.

Across two spells with his hometown club, Woodgate played 112 games across all competitions.

Woodgate, who won eight caps for England, later retired and went on to take on a role with Liverpool as a scout.
