Arsenal are in a mess, says former player

30 May 2019, 11:20

Lee Dixon believes his former club Arsenal is in a mess that even Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk would not make a difference.

The Gunners blew their chances of qualifying for the Champions League on Wednesday night after losing 4-1 to Chelsea in the Europa League finals. This will be the third consecutive season for Arsenal to play in the Europa League and Unai Emery will have a tough time rebuilding the club. The north London side has not won a league title since 2004 but Emery believes the club’s name is still big enough to attract big names.

“History doesn’t win you anything. History doesn’t win you games. The thing is you talk about the big player coming in, it’s the mentality at the club,” he said.

“One player, I’m telling you, you put [Virgil] van Dijk in that back four at the moment, the way that the team is set up without the ball it wouldn’t make much difference.”

The club has been linked with Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser as well as Dayot Upamecano and Thomas Meunier.
