Christian Eriksen's last-gasp goal saves Spurs blushes against Brighton

Tottenham Hotspur had Christian Eriksen to thank for securing all three points with his 88th-minute strike downing Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 in a match staged at the Tottenham Stadium on Tuesday 23rd April.

Early chance

Brighton showed their intentions from the onset as they sat deep looking to soak up the pressure and hit on the counter while Spurs were all out as they sought to secure Champions League football for another season. Spurs early pressure almost paid off in the 20th minute when Christian Eriksen’s free-kick took a wicked deflection off the wall before landing towards Vertonghen, whose shot was blocked by bodies in green after Wanyama missed contact while diving for the loose ball which enabled Brighton to clear the ball.

Andone chance

The Seagulls got their first real chance in the 35th minute when Andone made a ran after charging down Alderweireld’s shot, as the Brighton forward raced clear with Spurs’ center-backs out of position and with only Lloris to beat, Rose appeared from the left channel to slide and avert the danger for Pochettino's boys.

Alli chance

Spurs nearly went into the break leading but brilliant defending from Brighton denied them a snap at goal when Dele Alli controlled Trippier’s long ball with one touch before poking it goalwards, beating the diving Ryan only for Duffy to get in the way with an off-the-line clearance in the first minute of first-half stoppage time.

Duffy chance

Brighton got the second half underway fired up and went close in the 47th minute when Pascal Gross whipped in a diagonal free kick that found Shane Duffy who leaped above the Spurs' center backs to hit a powerful header but it was from a tight angle and it flew straight at a grateful Lloris.

Alderweireld chance

Spurs hit the bar in the 72nd as they wished the chance would have fallen to another player but it fell to Alderweireld whose low effort skid past Ryan only to hit the inside of the post and across an empty goal. Rose’ follow up cross was blocked, and Vertonghen was flagged for offside thereafter.

Eriksen goal

Brighton's astute defending for the better part of the game was undone in the 88th minute when Eriksen let fly with a rasping drive from about 20 yards out that beat a flailing Ryan as the Dane wheeled away in celebration as he bagged his second goal at the Tottenham Stadium.
