Lionel Messi once again proved his worth for the Catalans as he grabbed a brace while providing two assists for his side. Philippe Coutinho, Gerard Pique, and Ousmane Dembele were all on target as Tousart scored the consolation goal for the visiting side.
After a goalless draw at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, a win is all that Barcelona needed to advance to the next stage. However, a goalless draw could send the tie to extra time and possibly penalty while needed a draw of goals to go through to quarters.
Barcelona was awarded a penalty in the 16th minute after Denayer brought down Suarez in the box with a reckless challenge. Messi stepped up but had to wait for VAR check and the penalty was finally awarded. A panenka down the middle from Messi, cool as you like it and Barca had their lead in the tie.
Arthur carved an incisive pass through to Suarez. He skipped Marcal before squaring for Coutinho to casually tap into the empty net.
Lyon pulled one back through Tousart in the 58th minute. A corner was worked to Depay, who crossed in and the loose ball found Toursat who hit it on the volley to make it 2-1. The centre referee had to check VAR to see if Toursart or Marcelo were offside but the answer was no and the goal was given.
Messi drove at the defence and showed incredible balance to lose Marcelo and Denayer with a neat peg back onto his right boot. Gorgelin got a weak hand on it but he could not stop it from trickling into the bottom corner.
And the tie was actually over with Pique getting on the scoresheet. With Lyon completely open at the back, Messi charged forward and squared for the unmarked Pique at the far post to slide in and tap home.
The hosts dismantled Lyon with Messi the architect once again. He charged down the middle, as he had done so often in the game, and laid it off to Dembele on his left to slot away into the bottom corner.
