Nigerian captain is demanding excessive wages

Turkish Super Lig club Fenerbahce have reportedly pulled out of a deal to sign Nigerian captain John Obi Mikel in the January transfer due to his apparent excessive wage demands.

Fenerbahce are said to be in the market for a midfielder and striker and have been heavily linked to three key players of the Super Eagles squad from the 2018 World Cup, that being Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses and Mikel.

However, the executives of the Istanbul club held transfer talks with representatives of Mikel but couldn't match up to his demands.

According to reports, a couple of Major League Soccer clubs have courted Mikel in recent days but the gap between what the Chelsea legend is demanding and what they are offering him is significant.

The central midfielder will be 32 in April 2019 and is aiming for one last big pay cheque before officially hanging up his boots.

Mikel cancelled his contract with Chinese Super League club Tianjin Teda in January, a year before the agreement between club and player was due to run out.
