After a poor first half of the season, Athletico Bilbao are looking to bolster their squad with the club's sporting director, Rafael Alkorta confirming interest in Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera.
United landed Herrera from Bilbao back in 2014 after buying out his contract for a deal reported to be in the region of £29million under the reign of Louis Van Gaal. Herrera has played a key role in Manchester United especially in big games where he has been used to nullify the attacking threats of certain players. The Spaniard has won the UEFA Europa League, the FA Cup and the League Cup so far in his stay at Old Trafford.
Alkorta revealed their transfer plans in the January transfer window, “We are interested in Javi Martínez, Ibai, Ander Herrera, [Fernando] Llorente... we're interested in all of them. We still haven't made progress. We'll get together on Tuesday to see what can be done. I have just returned and this week we will look at our options.”
Bilbao currently sit on 17th spot, two points above relegation places and will next take on Sevilla in the Copa del Rey on Thursday 10th January before taking on the same opponents in the league on Sunday 13th January.
