City plot to ‘steal’ United target

Manchester City are reportedly ready to rival Manchester United for the rights to AS Monaco midfielder Fabinho.

Reputable news outlet ESPN has claimed that City boss Pep Guardiola is closely monitoring the Brazilian, who the tactician has singled out as the future long-term replacement for soon-to-retire veteran Yaya Toure.

Fabinho was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer but the Red Devils’ interest in the midfield maestro subsided after the English giants managed to pry Nemanja Matic from Chelsea for £40m, which solved United’s immediate needs.

Pep must however be prepared to part with around £67m to acquire the 23-year-old as the defending Ligue 1 champions are only likely to let go of their star for an absurd price.
