CAF CC: Rivers United beaten at home by Club Africain
Nigeria club Rivers United were beaten 2-0 at home by visitors Club Africain in a matchday 6 fixture of the CAF Confederation Cup.
After a barren first half on a rather water-soaked pitch following a heavy downpour, Manoubi Hadeed put the Tunisian side ahead in the 63rd minute from a free kick.
Further damage to the home side’s chances was inflicted when team captain Festus Austin scored an own goal in the 89th minute of the Group A Match Day 5 fixture to gift Club Africain, who’s first choice goalkeeper was stretchered off the pitch after suffering a serious injury.
Club Africain have now ended Rivers United's 25 matches unbeaten home run (24W 1D) on the continent.
Rivers United have now conceded two goals at home in the continent for the first time since March 2007 - 3-2 win over Banjul Hawks.
Club Africain, who have nine points from five matches and host KCCA in the Match Day 6 fixture same day, look to have already qualified for the knockout stage.
Rivers United will face FUS Rabat away on July 7 in their last match of the group phase, needing to win to have a chance of advancing to the quarter-finals.
