NPFL: Akwa United coach reacts after goalless draw with MFM in Lagos
Akwa United FC Head Coach Aliyu Zubair on Sunday said that Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has improved with the teams unable to boast of a win, draw or loss.
Zubair made the assertion the on the sidelines of the Match Day 20 NPFL opening fixture between Lagos-based MFM FC and Akwa United at Agege Township Stadium Lagos.
The league’s second stanza opening fixture ended in a barren draw.
The pulsating match saw both teams miss glaring chances with MFM mostly guilty having missed a penalty in the 33rd minute.
Stephen Odey played a lousy penalty into the hands of newly recruited Daniel Olorunleke of Akwa United.
Prior to the match, MFM has yet to lose or draw in their 11 matches played at home.
Zubair commenting on the match said that NPFL had come of age and no team in the league could boast of a win, draw or loss.
-This is an improved league and with no team that can boast that it will win, lose or draw at home or away. We have drawn three home matches so there is nothing special in our draw against MFM.
-We have said that we want to use MFM match to test the waters if we can win the league and now, we are on course.
-When the league started, for about six matches, we are at the bottom of the league standing, but we started improving as the game goes on.
-The way the league is going, any team can spring surprise, so we must watch ourselves, he said.
MFM Head Coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu said that the barren draw against Akwa United was not as a result of complacency.
-We weren’t complacent against Akwa United, this is the first match and we will reassess our team. We will look at where we faltered and address it..
-Our vision still remains on course regardless of the outcome of today’s match. We will continue to push towards our goal, he said.
