CECAFA U17: Uganda crowned Champions

Hosts Uganda re the winners of the inaugural CECAFA U17 Girls Tournament after recording a 2-0 win over Kenya on Tuesday at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

After Ethiopia had failed to turn up for the event and some countries refusing to respond to an invitation from CECAFA, the championship was played on a league format where the team with the most points was to be crowned champions.

Heading into the final round of fixtures in the six-nation tournament, Uganda topped the table with 10 points, two ahead of Tanzania and just needed to win against third-placed Kenya to ensure they clinched the title.

Uganda were the favourites not only as the hosts but they came into the showpiece after winning the COSAFA U17 Championship in November despite being a guest in the showpiece.

Uganda's capabilities

They showed why they were capable of in the final game against Kenya when Fauzia Najjemba gave them a 33rd minute lead before skipper and reigning FUFA women’s footballer of the year Juliet Nalukenge ensured that the points were safe with a second in the 44th minute.

Nalukenge who was the top scorer at the COSAFA Championship with 18 goals ended the tournament with 9 while her partner in crime Najjemba managed 7 same as Tanzania striker Aisha Masaka, who bagged seven goals in the 10-0 routing of Djibouti earlier in the day.

Najjemba was named the tournament Most Valuable Player while Daphine Nyayenga was voted the best goalkeeper.
