Barcelona are set to tie down Lionel Messi with a lifelong contract, following revelations that he was free to depart the club at the end of any season if he so chose to.
Reports emerged this week that there was a clause inserted in the contract when he renewed his stay in 2017, which allowed him to walk away anytime he felt like doing so.
The claims were confirmed by President Josep Maria Bartomeu, with initial reports also indicating that the Argentine was allowed to end his stay with the club if he were to join one of the lesser leagues.
The forward's contract runs until 2021, but the club would want to tie him down for as long as he can play, considering he is 32.
Messi made his first-team debut in 2003/4 in a friendly with Porto that marked the opening of the new Do Dragao stadium.
He has since become integral for the club, winning numerous titles including the Champions League, La Liga, Club Wolrd Cup and many more individual awards.
He also has five Ballon d'Or titles to his name, and is arguably the best player to ever grace the beautiful game in recent generations.
