Harambee Stars defender moves to Sweden

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu has joined Swedish top-tier side IF Elfsborg for an undisclosed period.

The youngster who was one of the revelations for the Kenyan National team in the 2019 African Cup of Nations has been in the books of Real Monarchs of the USA.

Pictures of the lanky defender in Sweden has surfaced on social media as he undertook media duties with his new club with the official presentation expected later in the day.

Okumu has been one consistent figure in the Kenyan national team where he has featured for the team’s U20, The Kenya U23 team (where he was the captain) and the Kenyan national team-Harambee Stars.

Kakamega High School

After graduating from the famous Kakamega High School, he went straight to the Kenyan Premier League with Chemelil Sugar FC acquiring his services in 2014. He was to represent the Muhoroni based side for six months before moving to South Africa where he was to join Free States Stars.

In 2018 he was to move to USA with AFC Ann Arbor before being snapped by Real Monarchs, the reserve team for MLS side Real Salt Lake.

Okumu will hope he can hit the ground running in his new club with the team currently sitting at position eighth on the Allsvenskan log with 27 points and hosts Sirius in their next league clash on Saturday 31 August.
