DR Congo giant’s TP Mazembe has received an invitation to grace the 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup that is slated for Rwanda from July 6-21.
In a statement on the club’s website, the club through president Moise Katumbi expressed their delight in the invitation with this being the third time they will be participating in the competition.
“The TPM is invited to the CECAFA KAGAME CUP to be held from July 6 to 21 in Rwanda. The Chairman Moise KATUMBI's club is happy and proud to be invited for the third time to this tournament which brings together teams from East Africa.
“The TPM has agreed in principle to participating in this tournament which will be dedicated to the commemoration of the 25 the anniversary of the Rwandan genocide,” a statement on the club’s website noted.
The news comes days after Tanzania giants Yanga SC had declined an invitation to the tournament citing various reasons for the same.
The tournament will be graced by Tanzania sides Azam FC and Simba (Tanzania), Uganda’s KCCA FC, Kenya duo of Bandari FC and Gor Mahia, Eagles of Burundi, Rwanda sides Rayon Sport, APR and Mukura with Zambia side Zesco United being another invited team.
A final list including teams from Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan is expected to be released in the course of the week.
