England beat Switzerland 6-5 on penalties to finish third in Nations League

09 Jun 2019, 19:00

England won the Bronze medal in the inaugural UEFA Nations League, after beating Switzerland 6-5 on penalties on Sunday evening.

The two teams could not be separated after 120 minutes, even though England could have won the match in regulation time, having been the better side.

The Three lions carved out numerous chances including hitting the bar four times but could not find the back of the net as they exhibited profligacy in front of goal.

Changes to the side

Coach Gareth Southgate made several changes to the side that lost 3-1 to the Netherlands in the semifinals, drafting back Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who did not start in the semis.

There was also a spot for Jesse Lingard, who came off the bench on Thursday, with Harry Kane and Sterling taking their positions as well.

Despite losing to the Netherlands in another 120-minute game, The Three Lions showed purpose and intent from early on, as the Swiss sat back and tried to hit them on the counter.

The first half was devoid of much action, with Sterling in particular off the pace as England tried to press for a clear scoring chance, with both sides going into the break tied at 0-0.

Drab second half

On resumption, the Swiss looked more dangerous, but it was England who could have taken the lead after some nice interplay between Alli and Kane.

The two teams, however, seemed to have run out of ideas as the match became drab with little action, as both managers made changes to change respective tides.

With six minutes to go, England thought they had grabbed the winner when Sterling's cross was met by Delle Alli, whose header rebounded off the crossbar.

Extra time

England were the best side in the extra time, but could not get the elusive goal as their chances were rebuffed time and again by the Swiss defence.

The match had to be decided by penalties, with England scoring all their spot-kicks, while Josip Drmic missed for Switzerland.
