Reigning European champions, Portugal settled for a 1-1 draw against Poland in a UEFA Nations League dead rubber clash as Danilo Pereira was red-carded for foul on Arkadiusz Milik inside the 18-yard area.
The game was of little significance with Portugal having already sealed their ticket to the finals of the Nations League and Poland were handed relegation to League B, a factor that contributed to the game’s slow start. Renato Sanchez could have found the back of the net in the eighth minute after slicing past the Polish defense but his effort was blocked by his own teammate Rafa Silva.
Fernando Santos’ men took the lead four minutes after the half-hour mark when Sanchez whipped in an inch-perfect corner to the near post that was nodded in by Andre Silva for his 15th international goal and third in the Nations League. Poland should have pulled level in the 37th minute but Tomasz Kędziora’s header found the crossbar from a free kick by Kamil Grosicki as Portugal went into the break leading 1-0.
After a mirror start to the first half, the game finally came to life in the 63rd minute when Danilo Pereira was handed his marching orders for toppling Arkadiusz Milik over. He stepped up to take the penalty and the drama continued as he was ordered to retake his penalty but he still put the ball at the back of the net to make it 1-1. Both teams looked contented with the draw as Portugal go through to the finals while Poland drop to League B.
